Grown-Up Coloring Book: Rapunzel by kuabci Grown-Up Coloring Book: Rapunzel by kuabci
Photoshop
December 2010

When my tablet was pretty new and I was learning the ins and outs of properly painting in Photoshop I wanted to practice on something, so I found a coloring page of Rapunzel ([link]) and voila. (It later occurred to me that I could do the same thing with my own drawings, which I have also since done.) I love painting my own things, but it's fun now and then to use the (usually) beautiful official artwork, and I think there's value in practicing this kind of painting and such. I would like to point out that I didn't use any textures, all of the detailing in the clothes was done by hand, which was fun, but made me glad it didn't cover the entire skirt, ha. It was fun playing a little with glowing effects on this one, and oh my, so much long blonde hair.

Also, she generally looks great in the movie, but am I the only one who thinks Rapunzel looks better as a 2D character than a 3D one? I'm just saying. There's something in those Glen Keane sketches that's just lost in the CG rendering of her.

Thank you very much! I wish I could take credit for the lineart, but I'll definitely take credit for the painting. :)

Thank you! Although I can't really take credit for the lineart since, as I said, it's an official coloring page I just used for painting practice. But I'm still glad you like it!

Beautiful work on the pose, lighting, etails...everything, simple, and I like the lineart too- it looks so 'clean', or how to express it =)

Thank you! I wish I could take credit for this particular very clean line art, but like I said in the description, it's an official coloring page that I painted. Thanks again!

No worries! I just wanted to make sure credit went where it's due. :) And I have done my fair share of pretty clean line art, this just doesn't happen to be an example of it. Thanks again!

Very lovely!:D

*sigh*I suppose 3D is the new 2D. I really hope 2D animation doesn't disappear! That would be horrible!:ohnoes:

It won't!!! I really believe that there's room for both art forms in the world of animation. And some studios have been sticking to their 2D guns! Let us hope and pray that others follow suit (this means you, Disney! >:| ).

I think the glow came out really well!

Thanks! And I know, right?? I've been waiting for them to make Rapunzel for like 15 years, and I always imagined it in 2D.

Ahhh, it's one of my dreams to someday, somehow see this movie exactly as it is except in 2D. (It'll never happen of course, but still, it's so beautiful in my head!) And thank you!

Coool. I like the patterns in the cloth!
I would so be doing this if I didn't want to improve my lineart so much. :)

Thank you! I actually painted that pattern by hand, no textures used. It was kind of fun, but I was glad that it didn't cover the entire skirt, ha ha.

That's the proper way to do it for sure!
It reminds me of how much I cheated with my newest Sally drawing XD Pretty much every pattern I used the fill bucket. Even for the rose pattern, I drew one rose then duplicated it.

Sometimes you just do what works, and sometimes it just looks better to use the tools at your disposal. I wouldn't necessarily call it cheating, maybe just being discerning and economical. :)

I think it would have looked better if I'd taken the time to do the patterns on it by hand. But I didn't feel like spending the time to do that, so I filled in the various patchwork bits of the dress with different fill-bucket patterns.
But yes, I don't feel any actual shame in using the fill bucket. Its just one of the perks of working with art on the computer... like being able to press "undo"

Oh yes, how many times in this day and age have I tried the old ctrl-z in real life?? Ha ha, the things we've grown accustomed to thanks to computers.
