Disney Un-Disneyed: The Emperor by kuabci
Disney Un-Disneyed: The Emperor

This one is probably the biggest stretch in my Disney source material read-through/Disney Un-Disneyed series, since The Emperor's New Groove is baaaaaarely based on The Emperor's New Clothes (review here), except in name/some main character similarities, but it was still a fun opportunity to draw a different sort of character to add to the series.  My first idea was to avoid drawing him, well, naked, and so draw him in some kind of skivvies, but underwear from those days (ideas included on the bottom left) were practically like being fully clothed anyway, so there wasn't much impact as to the character in this part of the story.  So, with a little (meaning a lot of) help from The Wife, I was able to figure out a way to draw him in the altogether without revealing anything.  It's not my favorite HCA story, but it's unique and has a lot to say.

Also, I don't know why so many of the last few Disney Un-Disneyed characters have been barely dressed, but that's the chronology, I guess!

For some reason this one gave me more trouble than I've had doing these for a long while.  I went through about a dozen thumbnails to get the pose (I wanted him to be standing upright, since he knows there's something about him that sets him apart from the apes, but I also wanted him to have some animalistic curves because of his upbringing...  The Wife suggested that I draw him sitting cross-legged and weaving palm fronds, which didn't seem to work for this series, but which was still a fun sketch), and this is my second Jane too.  I also tried not to make him too similar to my recent Hercules design (link below).  I guess a more crouched position might have made more of a contrast with his civilized alter-ego on the bottom left, but again, I didn't want to make him look too similar to my Mowgli (like also below).  Also, all those props!  Anyway, I more or less like how it turned out, though, again, Disney did seem to get him pretty much spot-on (though maybe he's described as a little bigger in the books, reviews here and here).

This one was fun to do.  It was hard to get away from Disney's design, since I think her look and costume(s) are pretty authentic, but it was fun to look up and draw some ancient Chinese wear of my own after reading some books about the legend (some seemed pretty accurate, here and here, and some, not so much... here).  I learned that (I think) Mulan means magnolia, so I tried to incorporate that flower into the design.

Ah, the mighty Hercules.  When I read some stories about this dramatic, doomed fellow (reviews here and here), it actually wasn't too hard to picture him differently than Disney did.  Still, this one was pretty challenging but also pretty fun.  The difficulty with drawing larger-than-life characters or extreme poses is that 1) it's a little intimidating to get the drama and everything right, even when (and probably because) I could see him so clearly in my head, and 2) it's really hard to know when to say when already.  I've been tweaking this here and there on and off for two days, and finally I just had to call it DONE and just post it.  I'll probably see a few things next time I look at it that I would like to change, but I shall try to resist!  Even now I can see how I should have pushed the pose a little, but ah well.  I tried to go for a dynamic look with a lot of detail for this one (OH EM GEE BODY HAIR WHY).

[Edit:  What did I say?  Barely fifteen minutes later and I found something I just HAD to update.  *facepalm*]

And now we reach Disney's version of Victor Hugo's classic in my Disney source material read-through.  I've read this book before, and I dearly love this edition for various reason (review here), even if it's not the most authentic translation (which it may be) and even if it's abridged (which it certainly is).  Anyway, it was fun to try to reinvent these two characters (I thought of just doing Quasimodo at first, but Esmeralda seems like such a principal and dynamic character I just couldn't resist, so I just did a little cameo of her in the background like so), especially since in some ways Disney designed them exactly as they are described in the book, especially Quasimodo.  Anyway, I don't know who read this book and thought, "say, that seems like it would fit in our line-up of Disney animation perfectly!" but whoever did, in a way they were completely right.

So I guess I started this account about three years ago so I could leave comments on some of my favorite artists' work, but never really posted any of my own work. Only recently I decided I might as well put some up. I'm not sure how often or how much I'll post, but I'll give it a go. It's a start at least!

More of my artwork can be found at asg.animatedheroes.com , and my wife and I have a joint art blog at penandpencilarts.blogspot.com . As it happens, she also has a dA account: limlight.deviantart.com/

See you around! Later, peeps.

Hello to you all.

In case you haven't noticed, most of the art I have posted for the last several weeks has been Harry Potter sketches.  I spent most of July re-reading the books, so I decided to finally clean up and re-scan some of my old HP arts (some older than others, rather like the books themselves) and post them somewhere a little more up-to-date than my old online gallery.  Well, this project took a little longer than expected, but it's over new (whew) and that's more or less it for the back-posted HP arts.  I'm glad to have seen them so well-received, and thanks to everyone for the comments and et cetera.  It's nice that my dA account now reflects more accurately my sketch history, since Harry and Co. have definitely been a huge part of my drawing repertoire for some years, even if this gallery until now hadn't really reflected that.  Goodbye for now, Boy Who Lived!  We love you so.

... And now we return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks a lot!  I've been adding a bunch of older artwork on there as I've been rereading the books, which has been fun.  I've done so much HP art over the last decade it seemed like I should be cleaning it up and posting it somewhere these days.
